~ Mixed Martial Arts ~

It has come to my attention that there are many Martial Arts schools professing to teach mixed martial arts. I find that quite strange due to the fact that every martial art is derived from several different disciplines. So I would then think that the correct term for these schools would be mixed, mixed matial arts. There are virtually no pure diciplines. All styles are and have been developed from influences of many different styles and times through out history.

When many of the Masters of the past developed a style they studied different styles for many years until they reached a high level of proficiency at all of them and then took from each style to create a new style of Martial Art. Then they named the style Tang Soo Do, Tae Kwon Do, Hap Ki Do, Kung Fu, etc. You cannot expect to go from school to school, study a little bit of this and a little of that, Learn some from books and videos and then set out to teach what you might call a "mixed martial art".

This is a very good sign that the school owner has no strong foundation in any style and has not reached a level of proficiency with any legitimate style so takes what he has accumulated here and there and calls it "mixed martial art".

Even Bruce Lee studied Martial Arts his entire life. He mastered 13 and from those styles that he mastered, he developed a style he named Jeet Kun Do. He didn't however call it "mixed martial arts."

If I studied new math from a math professor I would expect him to have some foundation and at least earned a degree in mathematics first before he professed to teach something he came up with. But thats just my opinion.

Buyer Beware!
